Hawkins, AKA "Brown Sugar," age 79, peacefully transitioned to eternal rest on September 19, 2025. Born on January 6, 1946, in Norfolk, VA, to the late George C. Hawkins and Emma L. Hawkins. Gwendolyn attended R. A. Tucker Elementary School and Ruffner Junior High School, and finished her education and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Upon graduating from high school, she began her career working with C&P Telephone Company in Washington, DC for many years. She then began a new career with the United States Postal Service, where she worked her way up to become a supervisor. After her retirement, she moved to Rocky Mount, NC, where she met new friends who became her new family. She met Brue & Willie that became her bowling friends and dinner family, Cindy & Richard her neighbor that was there when she needed help, we also have Gloria that was the friend that she always was there to lean a shoulder to cry and a ear to listen, to her talk and we can't forget Mrs. Marbeline, the one that fix her hair to look beautiful. Gwen's life was full of joy, and she was always willing to help when she could. Gwen was the person in the family who kept everyone together by organizing the family reunion for many years. Upon going to Rocky Mount, she began working at the post office to keep her mind sharp. During the holiday, she worked at the jewelry store just to make it and spend it on her family and friends for Christmas gifts. She loved to travel by going on Cruises with her family and friends, and also travelling abroad to other countries. Her warmth, wisdom, and devotion that she had toward everyone will never be forgotten. As we celebrate the life of Gwen, we will take comfort knowing that she is now at peace with her loved ones in heaven.
