M. HAYDEN DIES; FOUNDED FERRY SERVICE Was One of Organizers Of Willoughby to Old Point Line John M. Hayden, 74, retired stockholder and board member of the Chesapeake Ferry Company, who originated and operated the first vehicular service from Willoughby Beach to Old Point Comfort in 1924, died yesterday at 11:30 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital. He resided at 810 16 View Street, next to the Willoughby Ferry. Hayden and his associate, Frank J. McGuire, organized and managed the Hampton Roads Transportation Company which maintained a ferry service from Willoughby to Old Point from 1924 to 1929, when it was merged with the Chesapeake Ferry Company, which operated ferries between Pine Beach and Newport News. Both Hayden and McGuire, who died in 1945, became members of the board of directors and the former was a large stockholder in the company. In 1940, when Arthur D. Hitch became president of the company, Hayden was appointed as advertising manager, a position he retained until 1948 when the State purchased the ferries. Retired to Florida Afterwards, he was retired and went to live in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he purchased a home. He returned here this year. A native of Washington, he had lived here many years. He was a son of the late Charles and Mrs. Ellen Hayden. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Sykes Hayden; one daughter, Mrs. Estelle Harbough, of Washington; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Rosary services will be held tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments. The body will be taken from the funeral apartments to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ocean View, for funeral services Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** HAYDEN, JOHN M. - At a local hospital, Tuesday, October 30, 1951, at 11:30 a.m., JOHN M. HAYDEN, husband of Mrs. Bertha Sykes Hayden and son of the late Charles and Mrs. Ellen Hayden, in the 75th year of his age. Remains will be taken from the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Avenue, to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ocean View, for services SATURDAY MORNING, at 10 o'clock. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment, St. Mary’s Cemetery.
