Norfolk Virginian August 26, 1879
DEATH OF CAPTAIN W. J. HEARD
The above esteemed gentleman died at his residence in Berkley yesterday morning at 
1:30 o'clock, in the 49th year of his age. Captain Heard was a merchant, doing 
business in this city, though he had his residence in Berkley, and was well and 
most favorably known in Norfolk. During the war he was a gallant Confederate 
soldier and commanded a company in a Tennessee regiment. He leaves a wife and 
several children to mourn his loss.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Methodist Church 
in Berkley.
