He was general manager of the Southern Produce Company for 30 years prior to 1928. A native and lifelong resident of Berkley, he was a son of the late William J. and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Williams Heard. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mina Doughty Heard; one daughter, Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Heard Baum, both of Norfolk; one son, William J. Heard, of Kinston, N.C. and a brother, Charles F. Heard, of Front Royal. The body is being sent to the Cox Funeral Home, pending completion of funeral arrangements. ********************************************************************* W.J. HEARD FUNERAL SCHEDULED TOMORROW Funeral services for William Jackson Heard, 78, who died in Roanoke Friday, will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Cox Funeral Home by the Rev. Beecher L. Rhodes, pastor of Berkley Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. He lived at 206 East Indian River Road and was general manager of the Southern Produce Company for many years before his retirement in 1928. A native of Berkley, he was active in religious and civic affairs of the community. He was a member of the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church. A veteran of military service in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, he was a member of the Maj. Marshall Tarrell Camp, Spanish War Veterans. He also was a former member of the Norfolk Rotary Club. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Doughty Heard, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Heard Baum, of Norfolk; a son, William J. Heard, of Kinston, N.C.; a brother, Charles F. Heard, of Front Royal, and four grandchildren.
