William Heatherton, a veteran in the Norfolk fire department with the rank of 
hoseman, died suddenly at 12:45 o’clock yesterday while on duty at headquarters, 
to which he had been attached more than ten years. In the forenoon he had 
complained of feeling badly, but his condition gave no warning of serious 
developments and his death was entirely unexpected.
The cause of the fatal attack is said by Dr. James G. Riddick to have been acute 
indigestion. Dr. Riddick was at the building at the time Mr. Heatherton was 
stricken and had been talking to him just before the attack. Mr. Heatherton was 
preparing to go to dinner when the unheralded stroke came upon him, and within 
five minutes afterward he was dead, despite the efforts of Dr. Riddick to revive 
him.
For several years Mr. Heatherton was an active fire fighter and as such bore an 
excellent record. He suffered with rheumatism and, the affection being aggravated 
by the exposure to which every fireman must be subjected, he was at length 
relieved of duty as hoseman and assigned to day watch at headquarters.
He had been on watch yesterday and, though feeling indisposed, had made no request 
for relief from duty and, when he prepared to go to his home for dinner, it was 
his purpose to return and continue the watch as usual.
Mr. Heatherton is survived by a widow and two sons, George A. and Wm. J. 
Heatherton. They live at 304 Charlotte street. Mr. Heatherton was fifty years old.
The funeral will take place from St. Mary’s Catholic church Tuesday morning at 
9:30 o’clock.
