Helmick, 80, a dedicated and devoted family man, died Jan. 27, 2002, in a local hospital. He was born in Norfolk and was the widower of Helen Z. Helmick. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter supervisor. He was a member of Bowlarama Senior Bowling League and the Pipefitters Union. Mr. Helmick was a U.S. Naval veteran of World War II and Korea, and he enjoyed gardening. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Lowry and her husband William of Norfolk, and Deborah Helmick of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Theresa Marchand and her husband Daniel of Chesapeake, and Tracey Lowry; and three great-grandchildren, Courtney and Garrett Marchand, and Austin Lowry. A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by Marjorie Curtis. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
