She was the only daughter of the late John W. and Mary L. Tyler. She was predeceased by her brothers, Winston ``Mike'' Tyler and Walter White. Her early years in Norfolk public schools began at J.C. Price Elementary School and continued at Booker T. Washington High School. Upon graduation, she entered Virginia State College, Petersburg, where she received a baccalaureate degree in 1934. Subsequently, she earned a master's degree at New York University, pursued post-graduate study there, Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana State and the University of Southern California. Mary Lou's religious training and commitment began at an early age as she followed in the footsteps of her mother, a lifetime member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. Her grandparent's affiliation extended back to their marriage in the church in the 1800s. Her father, who was a staunch member of First United Presbyterian Church, equally influenced her Christian beliefs. In her later years, Mary Lou became and remained devoted to numerous activities in Bank Street Church, including the Missionaries, Golden Heirs, and the Archive Committee that she founded. Mary Lou received great admiration and respect for all of her contributions. In 1944, she served on the faculty of the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College (now Norfolk State University) for 31 years during which she was commended not only for her teaching expertise but also for her counseling and wide-ranging leadership in the college's development. Throughout her career, her other affiliations included board membership in the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project, among other community organizations. Although retired, Mary Lou remained active and participated in the Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter in Norfolk, the Moles, the Colonial Maids, Leisure Hour Club and other numerous organizations. As Mary Lou was loved by many, her life is treasured and her death mourned by her foster sister, Thelma Frazier; a niece, Leona Hawkins; her daughters, Diane and Denise; seven cousins; a sister-in-law, Dr. Mary H. Wright and husband, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright; a nephew-in-law; three nieces-in-law, ``nieces'' among her extended family; three godchildren; and a host of devoted friends. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will have a memorial service today at 6 p.m. at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, 7036 Chesapeake Blvd., Norfolk, where a funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow the funeral at Calvary Cemetery . The body will lie in repose from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
