HENLEY DIES Popular Young Attache of Dr. Schenck's Office Had Been Ill Three Weeks James R. Henley, for many years chief sanitary officer of the Department of Public Welfare, under Dr. Powhatan S. Schenck, died last night at 7:30 at a Norfolk hospital after an illness of three weeks. "Jim" Henley, as he was familiarly known to thousands of Norfolk people, was 33 years old and was a native of this city. He was one of the most popular and widely known young men in Norfolk. Mr. Henley was a member of Norfolk Lodge No. 1 of Masons; secretary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and a member of the Norfolk Lodge of Elks. He was engaged in public work practically ever since reaching manhood. On May 17, 1918, he enlisted in the Forty-seventh Engineers and was sent to Camp Sheridan, Ala., for training. A little later his contingent was sent to France and he was in that country when the armistice was signed. He was discharged from the army at Camp Lee on May 29, 1919. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wilhelmina Henley, to whom he was married one year and a month ago; his father, James E. Henley; his mother, Mrs. Carlotta Henley; a brother, R.C. Henley, II and sister, Mrs. W.E. Coley. The body was taken last night to the funeral apartments of L.L. Williams and will be conveyed to the residence, 202 Marlboro Avenue, Chesterfield Heights, for funeral services. Arrangements for the funeral and burial had not been completed last night.
