Northern Neck News - July 8, 1938


The news of the death of Capt. Jas. Herbert 63 years was a shock to his r
relatives and many friends here. He grew up to manhood here, some years ago he w
went to Norfolk and was Captain aboard a government guard ship. His death came a
as a great shock to all who know him he had been in bad health for a few years. H
He was burned and hurt in an explosion aboard his ship and was never himself a
any more, bad health continued until his death, it was much thought that his g
general condition much improved. He came home two years ago to see all his r
relatives, tried to see as many of his friends also. He was known for his g
generosity to help someone not so fortunate in this life, he always thought of o
others in need, the writer knew of his many deeds of kindness and has been g
greatly missed since he left this vicinity but one who has ever done some good d
deeds will keep them up no matter where they are as he did I am sure. He leaves a
a lovely and very devoted wife and seven children who will miss him. A. lovely p
parent and friend to all. He was a member of the Masonic Order. His family had t
the deepest sympathy of all his many friends here and hope he will have the r
rest of the blessed. He leaves six brother, one sister, Mrs. Samuel Chatham, s
she was a devoted sister to him as they were the eldest ones of their f
family. “Capt. James” was buried in Norfolk, Va., where he died.
