Herbert, the last member of Company F, Fifteenth Virginia Cavalry, which wrote its name in blazing letters in the history of the Civil War, will be laid to rest this morning in Cedar Grove Cemetery, following funeral services at 11 a.m. in Emanuel Episcopal Church, Kempsville, Princess Anne County. He died Sunday at his home in the county. With the passing of Mr. Herbert, who was known familiarly as "Captain Buck" Herbert, only 10 Norfolk veterans of the Civil War survive. The little company of 11 met last January 20 at the home of the Rt. Rev. Beverly D. Tucker, D.D., bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, who was himself a veteran of the war. Captain Herbert not only was the last member of his Civil War company, but the last member of his own family. Six sisters and one brother preceded him. They were Arthur E. Herbert, Mrs. Laura H. McAlpine, Mrs. Rebecca H. McNair, Mrs. Annie H. Foster, Mrs. W.W. Old, Mrs. H.C. Hoggard and Mrs. Norman Bell. Captain Herbert, born May 21, 1844, at the family home, "Level Green" in Princess Anne County, went into the Civil War at the age of 18. He was a private in the cavalry and he took part in the battles at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Culpepper, Brandy Station, Spotsylvania, Yellow Tavern, Winchester, and at many other points along the bitter battle line. In the battle of New Creek Station, he was cited for gallantry in action, and was promoted on the field of battle. He was with Lee's forces at the surrender. At the time of his death, he was commander of Pickett-Buchanan Camp, United Confederate Veterans and within the last month had been initiated as an honorary member of the Norfolk Post 392, Veterans of Foreign Wars. In Captain Herbert's company in the war were a number of men who later came to be exceedingly well-known in this locality. In that group were Judge J.M. Keeling, H.C. Hoggard, Thurmer Hoggard, Herbert L. Smith, R. Worthy Smith and John H. Ingram, all of whom had ridden out of Princess Anne County at the first call of war. At the last meeting of the Norfolk veterans, as guests of Bishop Tucker, the 11 survivors all of whom, including Captain Herbert, have enjoyed the rank of "Colonel," were: Col. J.V. Wade, Col. Theodore N. Mayo, Bishop Tucker, Col. George L. Arps, Col. C.S. Phillips, Col. John S. Webber, Col. J.P. Kevill, Col. William F. Lintz, Col. A.T. Herbert, Col. E.B. Freeman and Col. Oliver H. Perry. Bishop Tucker, the Rev. Pearson H. Sloan and the Rev. H.H. Covington, D.D., will officiate at the funeral today. Interment will be private.
