Hernon, a government lawyer many years, died Monday in his home after a heart attack. He was a graduate of Catholic University, receiving his L.L.D. degree from there in 1923 and an L.L.M. from Georgetown Law School in 1924. He practiced in Norfolk until 1936, when he went to work as an assistant attorney for the National Park Service. Subsequently he held a number of legal positions in the Department of the Interior. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Ann’s Church, Washington. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucille Mearns Hernon of Springfield; two sons, Joseph M. Hernon Jr., of Springfield and Navy Lt. Donald M. Hernon, of Bainbridge, Md., a brother, P. J. Hernon, and a sister, Marie Hernon, both of Norfolk. A funeral service was held in St. Ann’s Church Thursday. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, Md.
