When he died this week at 80, he was the prince of gardeners in this corner of Virginia, yet his acclaim - and the honors acknowledging it - reached as far as England and his native France. Fortune, in one of her happier moods, brought him to Virginia in 1936, after a career as an estate gardener in New York State. Late that year he was tolled to Norfolk as a landscape horticulturist by City Manager Thomas P. Thompson, who had a vision of the old seaport as a garden spot As Norfolk’s superintendent of parks for 30 years thereafter, Mr. Heutte translated the dream to flourishing reality. He planted 25,000 crape myrtles, created an Azalea Garden and founded the municipal Botanical Gardens. He was less public servant though, than resident guru to those who loved plants. He taught, he lectured, he wrote, all to one end: the conviction that the communion of seed and soil - even a mean scrap of marsh - could create beauty in the beholder as well as the beheld. Mr. Heutte was an artist, with the earth as his canvas and its bounty his pallette. He showed that the human hand that can split an atom or squeeze a trigger is also capable of fashioning grandeur and joy. His life was rewarding not only to himself but to the thousands of beneficiaries, who in years to come, will marvel to behold his creations embracing spring.
