The funeral of Dennis Hickey, the oldest member of the Norfolk fire department, 
who death occurred at Mount Hope Retreat, Baltimore, last Thursday, was held from 
St. Mary's Catholic church at 3 o’clock Sunday and was attended by a large 
concourse of the friends of the deceased and an escort from the fire department. 
The service was conducted by Rev. Father Edward J. Walsh, associate pastor of the 
church, who paid a glowing tribute to the life and sterling character of the 
deceased. As the casket was being borne from the edifice, Mrs. James Hughes 
rendered very touchingly the solo, “Face to Face.” There was a magnificent display 
of floral tributes, among them a magnificent cross six feet in height with the 
helmet of a fireman and the number of his company at the base. The remains were 
laid to rest in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Following were the pall-bearers:
Honorary - Thomas B. Rowland, William M. Hannan, P. J. Nolan, J. P. M. Joyce, F. 
McLaughlin, chief of the fire department; John S. Webber, assistant chief of the 
fire department; J. H. Kegebein, former chief of the fire department and William 
Hart.
Active - From the fire department - Captain W. H. Knight, Captain D. C. Bell, W. 
T. Pulley, William Wilkerson, J. J. Callahan, James Britt, L. B. Williams and J. 
H. West.
The deceased is survived by a son, W. J. Hickey; a brother, Timothy J. Hickey, and 
a sister, Mrs. Frank Evans, all of Norfolk.
