Hicks Sr. died suddenly at the home of his son-in-law, Dr. J.R. Speight, 384 Freemason Street, Tuesday night. The first knowledge of his death was on going to his room yesterday morning and finding him dead in his bed. The deceased had been in feeble health some time. He was formerly from North Carolina, but had been in Norfolk four months. He is survived by three children: W.C. Hicks of Philadelphia, S.D. Hicks of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Speight. The deceased was 75 years of age and was a man of fine character and had numerous friends, both in North Carolina and Virginia. Owing to Mrs. Speight being sick and under treatment at St. Vincent's Hospital, the funeral will be held from the apartments of H.C. Smith, 179 Bank Street, at 4 o'clock this afternoon. ***************************************************************** The funeral of the late S.D. Hicks was held from the apartments of Funeral Director H.C. Smith, 179 Bank Street, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. R.A. Benton of the Episcopal church and Rev. Dr. J.A. Speight of the Baptist church. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. The pallbearers were: George Chamberlin, Inman Payne, J.W. Stickley, R.W. Waldrop, Dr. K. Ruffin and Dr. P. St. L. Moncure.
