He was born April 21, 1919, in Norfolk, to the late James Davis Hicks and Mary Catherine Webb Hicks. James was a Civil War buff and was a member of the Norfolk County Grays Camp and enjoyed taking part in reenactments with the Mahone's Brigade. James was also an artist and painted with watercolors and oils. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, a dedicated youth leader with the Boy Scouts of America, a past member of the American Institute of Architects and a past master of Odd Fellows, Lafayette Lodge No. 9. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Marguerite U. Hicks; two sons, James Davis Hicks III and wife Thelma Hicks of Las Vegas and John Crandle Hicks and wife Donna Baumann Hicks of Lake Gaston, N.C.; six grandchildren, Tina Marie Beaudry, Sue Ellen Marie Bickley, Jennifer Lynn Adan, John Crandle Hicks II, Rene Michelle Hicks and Joshua Arthur James Hicks; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Laura Rene Foresland, James Harris Beaudry, Zachary Mason Bickley, Ethan Jacob and Austin Crandle Bickley, Cristian Bradley Noll and Makenna Paige Adan. A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the services on Saturday. You may offer condolences to the family at www.smithandwilliamsfuneralshome.com.
