The victim, Mrs. Madeline Irvine Hill of the 5800 block of Lowery Road, was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Herman R. Hill Sr., 80, police reported. Hill’s car was headed north on Azalea Garden Road when he stopped at Village Avenue, then pulled into the intersection, he told police. His automobile was hit in the right side by a westbound vehicle on Village Avenue driven by Irene A. Newsome, 44, of the 5400 block of Ashby Street, police said. The Newsome car skidded 51 feet before striking Hill’s automobile, police said. The impact spun Hill’s automobile around and into a southbound auto on Azalea Garden Road, which had stopped for a stop sign, according to police. The third car was driven by William C. Slaughter, 23, of the 100 block of Wallace Circle in Portsmouth. Mrs. Hill was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mrs. Mary Catherine Farrar Irvine. A Norfolk native, she was a member of the Old Donation Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; the Women’s Club of Norfolk; and the Sacred Heart Senior Citizens Club. Survivors, besides her husband, include two daughters, Mrs. Richard S. Costigan of Norfolk and Mrs. John T. Holman of Riverside, Conn.; two sons, Herman R. Hill Jr. of Lynnfield, Mass., and Irvine B. Hill of Norfolk; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The rosary will be recited in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments today at 7:30 p.m. A requiem mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
