Hillegass Sr., 79, died July 26, 2009, after many years of suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He was a resident of Virginia Beach. Mike was born in Baltimore and raised in the Ghent area of Norfolk. He attended grade school at Sacred Heart Catholic School and he graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic High School. Mike also attended St. Vincent's College in Latrobe, Pa. Upon retirement, he was a vice president of sales for INRYCO Steel. Mike was a member of the Norfolk Sports Club, the Father Kealey Council of the Knights of Columbus, Saints and Sinners and St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He loved playing golf and was a member of the Kempsville Meadows Golf Course. Mike also enjoyed hunting and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He loved his family and friends and they were very important to him. Mike enjoyed spending time at his Sandbridge beach cottage walking the beach and catching fish in his gill net. He was better known for his loving and charismatic qualities. Mike was also a hard worker and a perfectionist who always persevered in all of his endeavors. He was predeceased by his parents, Reon Hillegass Sr. and Mary Foley. Also by his son, Patrick Hillegass. Surviving are his loving and patient wife for 57 years, Catherine M. Hillegass of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Catherine Hartman of Virginia Beach and Frances DeBaun of Rosemount, Minn.; three sons, Michael Hillegass Jr. of Pinehurst, N.C., Edward Hillegass of Falls Church, Va., and James Hillegass of Virginia Beach; four sister, Mary Newsome of Virginia Beach, Sarah Haney of Norfolk, Margaret Gonzalez of Warrensburg, Mo., and Theresa Morgan of St. George, Utah; one brother, Reon Hillegass Jr. of Norfolk; and 18 grandchildren, Dr. Michael "Gabe" Hillegass III, Monica Day Boggs, Megan Johnson, Christine Lacy, Patrick Hillegass, John Hillegass, Timothy Hillegass, Catherine Hartman, Brandon Hillegass, Kali DeBaun, Meredith Hillegass, Julie Hillegass, Kevin Hartman, Lillianna Hillegass, Kaitlyn DeBaun, Erika Hillegass, Christopher DeBaun and Chloe Hillegass. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk. A Catholic Mass will be offered at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
