Esther L. Hines, 93, was born in Maysville, N.C., May 21, 1915, to the late William Henry Lassiter and Mammie Lassiter Gaynor. She was the oldest of four children. She was predeceased by her brother, David Lassiter; sisters, Claria Lassiter and Lillie Mae Roberts; her husband, Eugene W. Hines; and her grandson, Regional H. Williams Sr. She was a faithful member of the historic First Baptist Church on Bute Street in Norfolk for 71 years. She was the past president and served as an usher on Usher Board No. 1 for more than 50 years. She was also one of the original members of the Gleaners Mammie E. Gordon Missionary Society, Dorcus Bible Class and assisted with Vacation Bible School. She belonged to the court of Calanthe, Priscilla Court 296. She also was a committed member of United Order of Tents 515, Lane Jewels. Mom also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes and the Chesapeake Police Fund. She was past president of the civic league in Roberts Park. Her family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Sister Anne Willis, Angela Council, Janie Gordon and N.A. Tara Foreman for their commitment in providing extraordinary health care during our mother’s debilitating health crisis. Special thanks to Queenie and Shanita Hines for their loyalty and care. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Barbara Smith (HRT driver) and the HRT family for standing by our brother, Elston Hines, in this time of sorrow. She leaves to mourn her passing her four children: her extremely devoted son, Elston Hines of Chesapeake, devoted daughter, Kathryn H. Williams of Norfolk and sons, Eugene W. Hines Jr. of New York and Henry C. Hines of Houston. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; five great-great- grandchildren; three nephews; cousins; goddaughter, Thelma Ames; godson, Horace McCauley; and friends. Viewing will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk. Family will assemble at the residence located at 1229 Commerce Ave., Chesapeake, Friday at 11:15 a.m. Homegoing services will be held at the historic First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk, at noon.
