All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Robert Woolfitt http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00034.html#0008401 January 29, 2026, 6:21 pm Virginian-Pilot October 25, 1962 NORFOLK — Arthur Hitch, 72, owner-operator of Hitch Terminals, Money Point, and former president of Chesapeake Ferry Co., died Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. in his home at 1707 Bolling Ave. A native of Hamilton, N.C., and a resident of Norfolk 65 years, he was long active in business and civic affairs. Hitch was president of the ferry company, which operated between the Naval Base and Newport News and from Willoughby to Old Point, when it was acquired by the state several years ago. He recently was in the sand and gravel business. He was the husband of Mrs. Virginia Etheridge Hitch and a son of Frank and Mrs. Mary Sue Wells Hitch. He attended Norfolk Academy and Episcopal High School and attended the University of Virginia, where he played football and baseball. His family came to Norfolk in 1895. He was a member of the Maritime Commission and Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He also was a member of the DEEKS Fraternity at University of Virginia. Besides his widow, surviving are two sons, James E. Hitch and Arthur Hitch Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Arthur W. Brock Jr., and a brother, R. C. W. Hitch, all of Norfolk; and two sisters. Mrs. Pinckney T. Payne of Norfolk and Mrs. Henry A. Adams of Ann Arbor, Mich. The body was taken from Oliver Funeral Apartments to his home. A funeral service will be held in Christ and St. Luke's Church Friday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Peyton R. Williams. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
