A lifelong resident of Norfolk, he was the husband of Ruth S. Hitch. Hitch, whose company had supplied gravel to road builders in Virginia and North Carolina for a number of years, attended Manry and Episcopal high schools. During World War II, he was an aerial gunner in the Army Air Corps, flying 13 missions in B-24 aircraft in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded four bronze stars and the Victory Medal. His hobbies included sailing, hunting and training Labrador retrievers. He was a former member of the James River, Maryland and Talbot retriever clubs. He was a member of American Legion Post 34 and Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Other survivors include a daughter, Virginia Armstrong, and four sons, James E. Hitch Jr., Harry S. Hitch, George Edward Schaefer Hitch and John Hitch, of Norfolk, and a sister, Frances Ann Brock, and a brother, Arthur (Bootsie) Hitch, of Norfolk. A private funeral was held at noon Saturday by the Rev. James B. Samuel Jr. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, had charge of arrangements.
