Ruth Rankin Schaefer Hitch, 81, died Jan. 14, 2004, in a local hospital. Born in 
Norfolk Dec. 3, 1922, Mrs. Hitch was the daughter of the late Ann O. Schaefer 
and Harry Schaefer, and the widow of James Etheridge Hitch. She was a 1941 
graduate of Maury High School. Known to many of her friends as Schaefer, she was 
the head cheerleader at Maury when she graduated.
She was a lifelong member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk 
and also was a member of the Norfolk General Hospital Auxiliary and was one of 
the hospital's Pink Ladies.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia H. Armstrong and her husband, Andy, of 
Virginia Beach; her sons, James E. Hitch Jr. and his wife, Gina, of Broadway, 
Va., Harry S. Hitch and his wife, Page, of Suffolk, George Edward Schaefer Hitch 
and his wife, Yvette, of Virginia Beach, and John Hitch and his wife, Virginia, 
of Norfolk. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Nancy A. Pettitt and 
her husband, Bobby, of Camp Lejune, N.C., Susan E. Armstrong of Virginia Beach, 
John Clarke Hitch, James Royall Hitch and Samuel Schaefer Hitch, all of Norfolk 
and Luke Schaefer Hitch of Virginia Beach; and her devoted friend, Bonnie 
Beaver.
A funeral will be conducted Saturday at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 
Norfolk, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 560 
West Olney Road, Norfolk, VA 23507 or to a charity of donor's choice. H.D. 
Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
