She was born Aug. 18, 1919 in Norfolk, the daughter of Nicholas and Jennie Fascetta Cordovana. Mrs. Hoffenberger was a gifted pianist and organist. She often accompanied her brother, Dr. Michael Cordovana, professor of music at Catholic University to Italy as a participant and observer of opera productions on the Amalfi coast. She was organist at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ghent and at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Newport Avenue in Norfolk, where Mrs. Hoffenberger was a parishioner for many years. Most recently, she was organist and choir director at Our Lady of Victory Chapel, Norfolk Naval Base. She was a piano student of Samuel Silverman and received the Old Dominion University (then a part of the College of William and Mary) scholarship for piano and organ and studied under Professor Eugene Paxia and Professor Charles Vogan. Although best known for her liturgical presentations, she loved all kinds of music, especially jazz. She continued to play the piano at The Ballentine where she lived most recently. She was a supporter of the Virginia Opera Association, where she also worked as a volunteer, the Feldman Chamber Music Society and Catholic University Department of Music. Mrs. Hoffenberger was a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local No. 125. Mrs. Hoffenberger began work at the Naval Hospital Portsmouth. She also worked at the Center Shops department store on 21st Street as head of the china department. Mrs. Hoffenberger is survived by her three children, Michael of Alexandria, Joseph and his wife Judy of Pungo, Theresa Currie, her husband Robert and their son Nicholas of Alexandria, and her sister, Margaret Cordovana of Norfolk. Her husband Chris Hoffenberger died in 1982. Her brother Nick Cordovana died in 2004 and her brother Michael died in May 2010. Mrs. Hoffenberger leaves behind many devoted friends, including Thomas Pheasant and Juan Carlos Rincones of Washington, D.C., William Trotter and William Smoot of Portsmouth, Nicola Micena of Catania, Sicily, and Stephen Walsh of Alexandria. Mrs. Hoffenberger's life was committed to bringing the joy of music to her family, her friends and her native city. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with visitation at the church at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Norfolk.
