Mary Payne Hogan, widow of prominent local businessman, Hunter A. Hogan Jr., died 
at home Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, after a long illness.

She was born in Norfolk Jan. 7, 1916 to Mary Harmon and Dr. Robert Lee Payne. 
Fondly known as "Pudge" to her family and friends, she was predeceased by two 
brothers, Richard B. Payne and Daniel H. Payne.

She is survived by six daughters, Jane P. Batten of Virginia Beach, Cecelia Hogan 
of Sioux Falls, S.D., Pamela H. Cardona of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth L. Hogan of 
Denver, Colo., Hunter M. Hogan of Santa Ynez, Calif., and Harmon Hogan-Schaible of 
Hatteras, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is survived 
also by two brothers, Dr. Robert L. Payne Jr. and M. Lee Payne, both of Norfolk; 
and several nieces and nephews. She leaves behind a special friend, Clarice 
Elliott.

Pudge was married to Hunter, the love of her life, for 53 years and had eagerly 
awaited their reunion since his death in 1997. She was a devoted mother, a caring 
friend, a creative cook and gardener who always put others' needs before her own.

Burial will be private. A Christian wake will be conducted by Fr. Joseph Metzger 
at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at noon Wednesday, Oct. 29. In lieu of 
flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children, 
317 Chapel St., Norfolk or a charity of choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 
Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
