A native of Norfolk, he was the son of the late Hunter and Cecilia Hogan and graduated from Maury High School. Before retirement in 1983, Mr. Hogan served as vice president of C.G. Willis Inc., a marine transportation business in Paulsboro, N.J. Mr. Hogan moved to New Jersey in 1956 when C.G. Willis expanded its shipping operations from Norfolk to Paulsboro. During his years in New Jersey, Mr. Hogan was an active member of Cosmopolitan International, a civic service organization. In 1984, Mr. Hogan moved to St. Augustine, Fla., where he lived until relocating to Florence in 2000. An avid boater and fisherman, he served as commodore of St. Augustine Yacht Club. His wife of 42 years, Evelyn Willis Hogan died in 1983, and a granddaughter, Leslie Hogan Pugh, died in 1994. Survivors include three children, John A. Hogan Jr. of Florence, S.C., Stephen W. Hogan of Burke, Va., and Nancy Hogan Doell of Avalon, N.J.; a brother, R. Bevan Hogan of Ormond Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of his life at a memorial Mass Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at 11 a. m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Princess Anne Road and Blow Street, Norfolk. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
