Hogge, Aged 65, Stricken While Rowing Alone In Elizabeth River Coroner Decides No Inquest Needed Stricken with a heart attack while starting out for a row in his skiff in the Lafayette River off the east end of Fiftieth street yesterday afternoon, William Thomas Hogge, 65, of 824 West Fiftieth street, is believed to have died within a few minutes. The boat, with Mr. Hogge's body lying face down across one of the seats, was observed by L. A. Morris and E. L. Smith of the 700 block West Fiftieth street, as it floated to shore a short distance from the starting point. The two men set out in another skiff and recovered the boat and body. Mr. Hogge was dead when Mr. Morris and Mr. Smith reached his boat. His brother, John L. Hogge, formerly a sergeant in the Norfolk Police Department, died of a similar attack two years ago. Detective H.L. Dickens investigated the death for the police, and a further investigation by the city coroner's office resulted in the announcement that Mr. Hogge's death was due to natural causes and that no inquest would be necessary. Mr. Hogge's death occurred about 3:45 o'clock. As he collapsed, one of the oars dropped overboard and floated with the boat down the little inlet until both boat and oar went ashore. Mr. Hogge was a native of Gloucester County and had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 20 years. He was the son of the late George Washington and Mrs. Emeline Haywood Hogge and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada B. Hogge; two sons, Ernest L. and Grover R. Hogge, of Norfolk; three daughters, Mrs. Susie Hogge Bowes and Mrs. Gladys Colbert, of Norfolk and Mrs. Albert Kenny, of Mobile, Ala.; four sisters, Mrs. T.M. Myatt, Mrs. J.Frank Dailey and Mrs. Robert Belvin, of Norfolk and Mrs. F.H. Fuller, of Detroit and six grandchildren. The body was removed to the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Bro., 631 Westover avenue. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ****************************************************** William Thomas Hogge --Funeral services for Mr. Hogge will be conducted at the funeral home of E.
