Norfolk Virginian September 10, 1873
SUDDEN DEATH — It is our painful duty this morning to announce the death of Dr. G. 
W. Holland, one of our most esteemed and respected citizens, which occurred at his 
late residence at an early hour yesterday, from apoplexy. The deceased retired on 
the previous evening apparently in his usual health, and slept well, but early 
yesterday morning his wife was waked by him, when he remarked that he was not 
well, and in a few minutes afterwards he breathed his last. Dr. Holland was a 
native of the Eastern Shore of Virginia but had resided for a number of years in 
Florida. He has been living in Norfolk for several years past. The funeral will 
take place at 5 o'clock this afternoon, from his late residence, 117 W. Freemason 
street.

Additional Comments:
While his tombstone shows his date of death to be September 8, from this obituary 
and the VA death register, his death was early on the 9th.
