He was elected to the council in 1955, before the cities of Newport News and Warwick consolidated in 1958. Mr. Holland was a founding member and first president of Warwick Kiwanis Club in 1949, helping to form the first Key Club on the Peninsula. He served as lieutenant governor of the Capital District and as chairman of the Travelogue Program for 22 years. He was a native of Franklin, graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, and was a resident of Newport News for 60 years. Mr. Holland was formerly vice president of General Automotive Supply Co. in Norfolk and had been a Realtor with Carpenter Brothers and the Bryan Realty Co. of Newport News. As a member of the Warwick Masonic Lodge, he was past president of the Red Coats and most recently served as venerable master of the Lodge of Perfection and Wise Master of the Chapter of Rose Croix. He volunteered on the 1995 United Way Fund Distribution Steering Committee, as he had done for many years. He was an Advisory Council member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, he served in various capacities, including chairman of the Board of Trustees, superintendent of Sunday school, treasurer and member of the Administrative Board. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Elizabeth Jarvis Holland; four daughters, Talmage Lynne Brock of Arlington, Anne Burch and Nancy Miller of Richmond and Elizabeth Maxwell of Durham, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and a stepbrother, Dale C. Holland of Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Foundation, 10246 Warwick Blvd., Newport News 23601, or to a favorite charity. A Masonic service will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday at Peninsula Funeral Home, after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church by Rev. P. Edward Leonard. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk.
