Norfolk Virginian March 31, 1893
HOLMES — At residence of mother, Mrs. Mary E. Holmes, No. 112 Wide street, 
Thursday, March 30th, at 3:45 a.m., JOSEPH A. HOLMES, in the 21st year of his 
age.
Funeral from residence THIS (Friday) MORNING at 9:45 o'clock. Friends and 
acquaintances invited to attend.
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we love has stilled,
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon his love had given.
And though the body moulders here,
The soul is safe in heaven.

Additional Comments:
The discrepancy between the date of death on the tombstone and his obituaries can 
be explained by the early morning death occurring on the night of the 29th.
