Holmes, a retired mail carrier and a life long resident of the Southside, died Sunday, February 22, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Neal at 774 Lexington street. He was the son of the late Nathaniel and Lovey Holmes. Mr. Holmes had been confined to his home for more than a year. He is a veteran of the Spanish-American War, having served in the US Navy for four years. For more than thirty years he carried mail in South Norfolk and Berkley. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Berkley avenue, with the Rev. J. C. Diamond in charge. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Velma Neal; two sons, Sidney Lawrence and Francis Holmes; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Chatman Funeral Home was in charge of burial arrangements. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
