Holmes, 82, of 534 Spotswood Ave., Norfolk newspaperman, died Tuesday in a Norfolk-area hospital after a long illness. He retired in 1956 after a 60-year newspaper career, all of it connected with Norfolk newspapers. Until his final illness he was a frequent visitor to the news room of the Ledger-Star. A Norfolk native, Holmes received his education in the city’s public schools. He began his newspaper career on the old Norfolk Pilot in 1894. In 1896, he was named city editor of the Norfolk Landmark. In January 1912, he transferred to the Ledger-Dispatch. Holmes covered police and courts many years. He was known as an all-round newspaperman in the days when there were no specialists. He covered the burning of the dirigible Roma, the first test of torpedoes against ships, and the Atlantic and Monticello Hotel fires. During his long career with the Ledger-Dispatch, he was drama and movie critic, telegraph editor, and finally feature editor. As theater and movie critic, Holmes knew the greats and near-greats of the theater when traveling shows appeared in Norfolk theaters. But he never forgot his experiences as a copy boy. “Be good to the copy boys," he would say. “They’re on their way up. They might be our boss some day." Holmes was with the Ledger-Dispatch when the paper was published on Plume Street in a building where the Trailways Bus Terminal now stands. He also assisted in moving the Ledger office to the present address, 150 W. Brambleton Ave. Holmes was a convert to the Roman Catholic faith and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma E. Holmes; a son, Dr. Edward M. Holmes Jr. of New Delhi, India; a sister; and two grandchildren. The body was taken to H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments.
