Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, November 16, 2003 
Sidney Lawrence Holmes Sr., 91, of the 1000 block of Dulcie Ave., departed this
life on Nov. 12, 2003. He was employed with the Naval Air Station for more than
30 years and was a member of First Baptist Church Berkley, where he served as
chairman of the Deacon Board and as a member of the choir. He was an avid sports
fan and was a member of the Norfolk Gridiron Sports Club, where he served as
president for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy S. Holmes of Virginia Beach; two daughters,
Phyllis L. Sweat (James) of Hampton and Velma E. Rhone (Raymond) of Cleveland,
Ohio; one son, Sidney L. Holmes Jr. (Helen) of Columbia, Md.; nine
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at noon at First Baptist Church Berkley.
Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be Monday from noon
until 8 p.m. at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.
