Carol was the daughter of Margaret Hungate Paulette and the late Page Paulette, and was the granddaughter of the late Lelia Alley Hungate. Besides her mother, she is also survived by her husband of 43 years, Paul deC. Holt, Jr.; her daughter, Catherine E. Gargano, and her husband, Victor, and their 3 children, Victor Dale Gargano, Jr., William Garrett Gargano and Casey Elizabeth Gargano; and her son, Paul deC. Holt, III and his wife, Carol, and their 2 children, Olivia Claire Holt and William Paul Holt. Carol graduated from Granby High School in 1961 and received her BS degree in elementary education from Old Dominion College in 1965. She taught in the Norfolk Public School System from 1965 to 1971 as a first grade teacher. After which, Carol started her own child care business in 1978, and for the last 13 years was joined by her daughter as a co-owner of that business. Carol spent many years as team leader for the swim team at Mallory Country Club in West Ghent. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church along with the rest of her family. Carol was devoted to all of the children she kept, and loved each one like they were her own. A Poem by an unknown author sums up her long career: A willing partner for working moms, she comforts, pampers, sooths and calms. With all the love she has to share, she's great to have when mommy can't be there. She loves to rock a fussy child. Corrects the one that gets too wild. She hears her share of tearful pleas, and comforts those with skinned up knees. With little children she plays games of peek, for bigger ones it's hide and seek. She is an expert at each game, but somehow loses just the same. She helps them learn the alphabet, And gives them hugs when they're upset. She gently tucks them in their beds, with dreamland tales for sleepyheads. She is a true and trusted friend, who helps them learn and play pretend. Although she's paid, it's plain to see, she serves them with a love that's free. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, at First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to EDMARK Hospice for Children, 516 London St., Portsmouth, VA 23704, the Norfolk S.P.C.A., 916 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23504, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
