Mr. James B. Hopkins met with a serious and fatal accident yesterday morning while out gunning near Campostella bridge, Brambleton, in a boat. He is a painter by trade and started off for a day's sport. Near Campostella bridge, he saw a bird flying in the air, and, thinking he could bag his game, hurriedly caught hold of the gun, which was in the stern of the boat, and pulled it towards him. His hand had caught hold of the muzzle of the weapon as he reached for it and, when he drew it towards him, the trigger caught on the seat and fell with a snap, exploding the cap and causing the gun to go off. The entire lead of shot entered Mr. Hopkins' breast and made a hole as big as a man's fist and must have caused instant death. The boat was near shore when the accident occurred, and it was only a short time before the horrible discovery was made. Coroner Newton was summoned and, as there was no doubt of death having ensued from accidental causes, decided that there was no necessity of holding an inquest. Mr. Hopkins was an unmarried man and much liked by those who knew him. He resided at No. 1429 Brambleton avenue.
