Mrs. Horenstein was born in Norfolk, the daughter of the late Samuel Stam and Rebecca Rubin Stam. After graduating from Maury High School, Dysie worked as a secretary in downtown Norfolk where she met and married her beloved Mike. She worked beside Mike "The unofficial Mayor of Colley Avenue" at Mike's Colley Delicatessen for 43 years. Dysie and her sister Esther Stark started the first Day Camp and the gift shop at B'Nai Israel Synagogue where she had been a lifelong member. She was a member of the Synagogue Sisterhood and held several officer positions during her life. She was a life member of Hadassah, Hebrew Ladies Charity Society and B'Nai Brith Auxiliary. Dysie was instrumental in the formation of the volunteer program at Beth Shalom Home where she volunteered twice a week for 18 years and was honored as Volunteer of the Year. She was also instrumental in helping Russian families settle in Hampton Roads. She was preceded in death by her husband Michael Joseph, her sisters, Esther Stam Stark and Judith Stam Schiller, and a granddaughter, Ryan Paige Segal. "Ema" as she was called by her family leaves behind to cherish her memory a son, Dr. Martin Horenstein and his wife Lucy of Richmond, two daughters, Ronnie Yancey and her husband Walt of Virginia Beach and Gayle Tedford of Michigan, her grandchildren whom she adored, Sharon Morak and her husband Mike, Wendy Yancey, Andrew Yancey and Scott Tedford; her new great-granddaughter, Rachel Morak, and many loving nieces and nephews and Ginger. She will be in our hearts always. A funeral will be conducted today at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts, Norfolk Chapel. Burial will be in B'Nai Israel Cemetery in Norfolk. Her family would like to thank the assisted living staff at the First Colonial Inn for their care and kindness during her residency there. The family will observe shiva at the Yancey residence during the coming week.
