Norfolk Virginian Pilot Friday December 3, 1943
Mrs. Nannie Bernard Howard, 71, one of the best known and highly esteemed 
women of the Southside, died yesterday morning at 7:15 o'clock at her home, 
200 Poplar avenue, after a brief illness. Wife of James Darian Howard, a 
daughter of the late Dr. Robert S. Bernard and Mrs. Sarah Rebecca Barrett 
Bernard, she was a native and lifelong resident of Berkley.
She was a member of the First Congregational Christian Church and was very 
active in its endeavors. In addition to her husband she is survived by a 
son, James Darian Howard, Jr.; a grandson, James Darian Howard, III and a 
sister, Mrs. C.E. Leary, the latter of Portsmouth.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the 
residence. Interment will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
