The grim reaper claimed the life of 16-year-old Arthur V. Howard of New York City, a former John T. West and Booker T. Washington High School student here, when he fell seven stories from an air shaft November 2. He was brought back here for funeral services which were held at First Calvary Baptist Church, November 6, with the Rev. O.J. Allen officiating. The youth fell on top of a lower building and was taken immediately to a New York hospital where he died shortly afterwards. The youth, accompanied by six other boys, had just finished building a pigeon house on top of another building when they started walking and jumping form roof to roof, it is alleged. The victim is said to have been leading the group and unknowingly came to the air shaft from which he fell. Mr. Howard was a student at the Frederick Douglass High School in New York. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Howard, 944 Sutton Street, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Howard, who formerly resided on Broad Creek Road here. The deceased youth was a member of the First Calvary Baptist Church while here and attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in New York. He was well known by the young people in both cities. He is survived by his parents, one brother, four sisters, two grandmothers, one grandfather, four uncles, six aunts, and other relatives. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery.
