She was reared by her parents, and she attended Norfolk Public Schools before enrolling at Virginia State College, now Virginia State University. She also attended Columbia University in New York and the University of Puerto Rico. Doris was an honor student at every school she attended. She was valedictorian of her class at Booker T. Washington High School and graduated with honors from Virginia State College. During her years in college, she was a member of Virginia State's dance troupe. At a very early age she became a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, and she attended this church throughout her life before struggling with a long illness, to which she eventually succumbed. All who knew her called her "Doris" or "Ms. Howard" or "the Spanish teacher at Booker T." She taught Spanish at the school for 41 years. She loved teaching at Booker T., and she also loved being retired after so many years of teaching. Before she became ill she spent her retirement visiting her brother in Miami, Florida, her sister in Washington, D.C., and her nephew in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Eventually, she had to stop traveling, stop cooking, and stop "looking after her yard." Fortunately, she was able to read until a few months ago. For many years Doris also kept busy by taking tailoring and other sewing courses. She made chair covers and many of the clothes her younger siblings wore. Her other hobbies were reading and cooking. She was an excellent cook. Doris entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 19, 2014. Her memory will be cherished, and she will be lovingly remembered by family and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers James Bernard Howard, Jr. (Dorothea) and Arthur Howard; and by her sister, Dolores Howard Pritchard (Oscar). She leaves to mourn two sister, Mable Howard of Norfolk, Virginia and Vernice Howard of Washington D.C.; a brother, Vernon Howard (Villetta) of Miami Gardens, Florida; nephews, Sean and Charles Howard of Miami Florida, and James (Jean) and Randon Howard of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and niece, Kendal Howard of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, June 28 at First Calvary Baptist Church, 813 Henry Street, Norfolk. The funeral procession will gather at 11:15 at Hale Funeral Home.
