JURY IN THE MAUD HOWARD CASE RENDER VERDICT. The jury of inquest in the case of Maud Howard, who was found dead in bed at 514 Water street Sunday morning, met yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock in the office of High Constable Pettis and rendered a verdict to the effect that the deceased had come to her death by suffocation, superinduced by chronic alcoholism, in an accidental manner, while intoxicated. It was the belief of the jury that the woman had turned upon her face in bed and was unable to change her position. Only one witness was examined at the inquest yesterday afternoon. The witness was Wm. E. Russ, a marine engineer, residing at 520 Water street. This witness completely exploded the murder theory by stating that when he saw the body, and it is believed he was the first to see it, there was no towel, shirt or anything about the neck of the deceased woman. What he saw was a light undergarment upon the upper part of the body, which was worn in a proper manner and was free about the neck. Coroner Batts conducted the investigation. The funeral of the deceased took place yesterday morning from the undertaking establishment of Messrs. J. L. Morris & Co., Church street. Rev. J. B. Merritt, of the Seamen's Bethel, officiated. The interment was in the strangers' lot in Elmwood Cemetery.
