Elsie Muriel Howard, formerly of Rockbridge Ave., entered Rest on Wednesday, 
March 17, 1999.



She was born at St. Christopher's Hospital, Norfolk, May 7, 1908; her parents 
were the late Elsie North Howard and the Rev. David W. Howard, D.D., both of 
whom were born in England. The Rev. Dr. Howard was rector of St. Luke's 
Episcopal Church, Norfolk, from 1907 until 1932. ``MeMe,'' as she was called, 
was educated in local public schools, and subsequently matriculated at the 
State Teachers' College (now Mary Washington) Fredericksburg, where she 
received a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1930. From her graduation 
on, Miss Howard educated hundreds of Norfolk schoolchildren, first at Patrick 
Henry and then at Taylor Elementary - a span of more than 40 years.



Following her retirement in 1970 from the Norfolk Public School system, Muriel 
Howard served the American Red Cross as a volunteer where she received many 
awards for her fidelity and dedication to the cause. She will be remembered for 
the above, for her love of travel, and for her care for the well-being of 
animals.



Friends may call at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave., 
Norfolk, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The Burial Office will be read by the Rev. 
Gordon B. Davis at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Selden Chapel at Christ and St. 
Luke's Church, with interment following in Elmwood Cemetery . Memorials may be 
directed to the SPCA of Norfolk, 916 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk 23504, or to the 
Cot Fund at Christ and St. Luke's Church, Olney Road at Stockley Gardens, 
Norfolk 23507.
