Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark October 5, 1924

James Thomas Howard, aged 82 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grace 
Sykes, 208 Poplar Avenue, last night at 6:20 o'clock. He had been sick six 
months.
Mr. Howard had been a resident here for 50 years and was one of Berkley's well 
known and esteemed citizens. He was a son of the late William F. and Mrs. 
Emaline McDonald Howard, of Portsmouth and was a member of the Berkley Avenue 
Baptist Church.
Mr. Howard is survived by these children: Mrs. C.E. Rudd, Mrs. Grace Sykes, Mrs. 
Joel Wood, Mrs. W.M. Thomas, of this city; Mrs. Charles T. Madrey, of Richmond 
and J.D. Howard, of Berkley; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Dawley, of Norfolk and Mrs. 
Robert Hewitt, of South Norfolk and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the residence Monday afternoon at 4 
o'clock and burial will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery.
