She was born in Loogootee, Ind., Sept. 15, 1922, the daughter of James and Gladys Summers. She was raised in Wayne, Mich., and married Franklin Murray Howell soon after the conclusion of World War II. Franklin was a highly decorated Naval fighter pilot. The marriage began a 28-year sojourn for B as a proud military wife and mother of six. She is survived by her sister, Karen Wiltz; daughters, Barbara Jean Howell, Maureen Elizabeth Kaufman and Julie Anne Decker; sons, David Robert Howell, Branson James Howell and Bruce Edward Howell; nine grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. B was a member of St. Pius X Church for more than 40 years. She touched the lives of all she came in contact with. She was the maternal mother of six and the "adoptive" mother of many. Her loves were many and varied: her devoted companion, Ray, the YaYa Sisters, her cat Pudelos, cooking, crossword puzzles, volunteer service and doing for others. Her unabiding love was her family. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her selfless attitude and countless acts of compassion. Truly the world is a less gentle place with her passing. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
