She was seriously ill from Sept. 1 and was a hospital patient for about one month. She was the wife of William M. Hubbard, a Hampton graduate, who has been on the staff of the Journal and Guide since Oct. 1,1923. She was a native of Norfolk and the daughter of Mrs. Josephine Miller and the late Joseph Miller. Mrs. Hubbard held the bachelor’s degree from Virginia State College, Petersburg, VA and the masters degree from Columbia university. She spent practically all her career as a public school teacher, having served in this capacity about 40 years. She served on the Eastern Shore in 1920-21, and was on the faculty at Lott Carey school in Norfolk at the time of her death. Mrs. Hubbard was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute street, Norfolk, where she served in the Do All We Can Club, Dorcas Class and other auxiliaries. She was a member of the Lindenwood Beautification Club and the Virginia Teachers Association, being affiliated with the teachers organization of the Second District and the Norfolk Teachers Association. She is survived by her husand, William M. Hubbard; mother, Mrs. Josephine Miller; one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Fentress, New York City, and other relatives. A funeral service was held from First Baptist Church, Bute street, Tuesday evening at 2:30 with the pastor, the Rev. E. Paul Simms officiating assisted by the Revs. W. L. Hamilton and C. E. Griffin. Music was by the church senior choir and organist and Miss Myrtle Griffin, soloist. The processional reading and prayer were by Rev. Dr. Simms followed by music from the choir. Rev. Dr. Griffin read from the scriptures and acknowledgements were made by a member of the church’s Helpers’ Club. Rev. Dr. Hamilton brought remarks from Shiloh Baptist Church and other congregations and a medley of favorite hymns of the deceased were played by the organist. In the eulogy, Rev. Dr. Simms described Mrs. Hubbard as a person dedicated to her profession, home, church and community. The solo by Miss Griffin was “No Burdens Can Pass Through”. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery with B. F. King Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
