A native of South Boston, Mr. Hubbard was attending Hampton Institute when World War I started, and he was called to serve in the Army as a band sergeant for the 369th Infantry. After the war, he returned to Hampton Institute where he continued his studies in printing and played the tuba. After graduating, he went to Norfolk, where he was hired by the Journal & Guide as a Linotype operator. He worked his way through various positions until he was promoted to production foreman. Mr. Hubbard taught many young people the printing business when they were hired by the Journal & Guide. "He was good at his job, and he was always willing to help somebody," said Southall Bass III of Virginia Beach, retired general manager of the Journal & Guide. Mr. Hubbard was with the newspaper at its peak when it published seven weekly editions and had employees working around the clock. "He developed that himself. He saw the need for it, and the company put it in his hands to organize," Bass said. Mr. Hubbard retired from Journal & Guide in 1972 after 49 years of service. Throughout the years, Mr. Hubbard continued to play the tuba and was a longtime member of the Excelsior Band, a well-known black marching group based in Norfolk. Other memberships include the Chi Beta Chi Social Club, the American Legion Attucks Post 5, and the Hampton National Alumni Association. He was a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street, where he taught the Big Brotherhood Bible Class. He is survived by his wife, Mayson Ryland Hubbard, and a sister, Lillian H. Harris of Philadelphia. The funeral will be at noon Saturday in First Baptist Church Bute Street. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may join the family at 11 a.m. Saturday at Graves Funeral Home for the procession to the church. The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
