She is descended from Scottish ancestors, James and John Taylor, who settled in Norfolk in the late 1600's. Born on January 3, 1927, she attended Holton Arms Junior College, and graduated from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Hudgins cared about enriching community life, preserving Norfolk history, and volunteering at her church. She served as Vice President for the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Member of the Boards for the Friends of Historic Houses of the Chrysler Museum, Friends of Norfolk's Historic Cemeteries, the Senior Citizens Service Center, Norfolk Day Nursery, and Portsmouth Children's Museum She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, and the Garden Club of Norfolk. A lifelong, active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, she participated in church life as Co-Chair for the Episcopal Churchwomen, a member of the Pastoral Care Committee, and the Altar Guild. Mrs. Hudgins is survived by her husband of 66 years, Curtis Randolph Hudgins, Jr., sister-in-law, Mary Ashley Rice, and 4 children, Jane Hudgins Frazier of Norfolk, Curtis Randolph Hudgins III of Charlottesville, Brooke Hudgins Wilson and husband, Walter Wilson of Atlanta, and William Alexander Hudgins and wife, Virginia Hardy Hudgins of Virginia Beach; 8 grandchildren, Allen Taylor Wallace, Stuart Meadors Wallace, Claire Randolph Frazier, William Randolph Wallace, Steven Barron Frazier, Grace Wallace Mills, Anne Porter Hudgins, and William Alexander Hudgins, Jr. She was predeceased by her sisters, Aileen Black Gustin, and Jane Black Clark. Mrs. Hudgins had a full and rewarding life. She and her husband enjoyed time spent with their family and friends at their homes in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. In her younger years, she enjoyed a good game of tennis with friends. Her spirit of adventure and interest in history led to great trips, shared often with her husband or children. She was devoted to her immediate and extended family, and we, all, admired her determination and great spirit in meeting life with its challenges. We were blessed with loving, steady encouragement, sprinkled with her special sense of humor. Our heartfelt gratitude to loving friends and caregivers, especially Brenda, Jet, Maryann, Demi, Angie, Joyce, Annie, Elma, Mary, Geneva, and Josephine, Gentiva Hospice, and others who nurtured her over the past 8 years. We are so thankful to them for helping our parents enjoy their life together at home. A private family burial will be conducted at Elmwood Cemetery. A funeral service will be held on Sat. Nov. 19th at 12:00 P.M. at The Church of the Good Shepherd, and a reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 in the reception room downstairs at the Algonquin, 7320 Glenroie Ave, Norfolk.
