Oliver Funeral Apartments August 7, 2018 Curtis Randolph Hudgins Jr., 94, of Norfolk, Va. died peacefully on Aug. 5th, 2018 in his home. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Curtis Randolph Hudgins and Mabel Smith Hudgins and descended from Lewis Hudgins, a major shipbuilder in Mathews County, Va. during the mid-1800s. Happily married for 66 years, he was predeceased by his loving and cherished wife, Anna Black Hudgins. He is survived by his sister, Mary Ashley Rice, and his wonderful and devoted children, Jane Hudgins Frazier, Curtis Randolph Hudgins III, Brooke Wilson (Walter), and Bill Hudgins (Virginia). His grandchildren, Claire Frazier, Barron Frazier (Laura), Anne Porter Hudgins, Will Hudgins, Taylor Wallace, Stuart Wallace, William Wallace, and Grace Mills (Tyler), brought much love and happy times to the family. Randolph was educated in Norfolk Public Schools, Episcopal High School, Hampden- Sydney College, and University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. Commissioned in the USNR in 1945 at Northwestern University, he received the GSB degree from Rutgers University. Naval service took him to the South Pacific, where he was assigned to aviation and rescue work, and stationed at Los Negros Is. in the Admiralty Islands. In Norfolk, he served on the staff of CINCLNFLT, where he was involved with Naval Intelligence during the Korean War. His career began as Assistant Trust Officer with the National Bank of Commerce. In 1954, he joined JC Wheat & Co. as a partner, which later became Wheat First Securities, Inc., serving there for over 40 years in many capacities and enjoying many life-long friendships. Subsequently, he joined Capes Capital Management as an Investment Advisor for 8 years. Randolph’s Christian faith directed relationships with family, friends, and community. Active with First Presbyterian Church in his early years, he later joined the Church of the Good Shepherd and served on its vestry. As President of Tidewater Westminster Homes, he was involved in the planning of John Knox Towers in the Ghent Restoration program, and, also, in the planning and development of Westminster Canterbury at Va. Beach. During his career, he was interested in improving the study of economics in the school system and the community. He helped establish Junior Achievement of Hampton Roads, and, with Dr. Usman Quereshi, Dean of Economics at ODU, The Economics Club of Hampton Roads. Mr. Hudgins served on the Boards of Hampden-Sydney College, YMCA, Sentara Hospital, NYCC, Lochaven Civic League, Salvation Army, and the Virginia Club. In 2000, he was honored by Hampden-Sydney College with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for extraordinary service. In addition, he enjoyed his association with the Norfolk Kiwanis Club, Chrysler Museums Historic Houses, and The Book Club. Randy's favorite memories were of summers in Mathews County and on 80th Street at Virginia Beach with family and friends. He enjoyed his routine of a daily afternoon swim at the beach, and was an avid tennis player. He and Anna loved traveling in Europe and on the west coast of the U.S. He had a kind and generous spirit, often delivering fresh figs or peaches to a friend. Without a doubt, he inspired his children and grandchildren to be the best they could be. The family wishes to thank dear friends and caregivers who generously provided loving care in his later years. The family will receive friends at a visitation on Wed., Aug. 8th from 5 pm-7 pm. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. A memorial service, celebrating his life and a reception will be conducted at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 7400 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA on Thurs., Aug. 9th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial recognition may be made to the family's Hampden-Sydney Scholarship Fund, or the Church of the Good Shepherd.
