James Herbert Hughes, son of the late William L. and Annie C. Hughes, and 
grandson of the late Rev. Zachariah Hughes, died after a brief illness Sunday 
morning at a local hospital. Mr. Hughes was for years a member of the First 
Baptist Church, the choir and auxiliaries. For 25 years he was a leading 
barber of the Berkley Ward. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, several 
sisters and brothers. The funeral was held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First 
Baptist Church, the Rev. R. H. Bowling officiating.
