A native of Shawboro, NC, Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Lena Sears. She had lived in this section for more than 20 years. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 16, at 2:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Church of God in Christ where she was considered as the Church Mother with the Rev. D. Harvey Dunlap officiating. He was assisted by the Revs. J. Q. Lassiter and Thomas Davis; Elder A. Grandison, Elder Barnes, Elder White, Rev. Mr. Richardson and Mother Duke. Mrs. Hughes is survived by four daughters, Mesdames Mary Williams, Hattie Moore, Annie Nixon and Lenora Haskins; three sons, Messrs. Isiah Hughes and James Hughes of Norfolk, and the Rev. Alonzo Hughes, New York, and other relatives. Burial was in Mt Olive Cemetery with Pretlow’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
