Virginian-Pilot January 8, 1940
Floyd Hughes, 78, Collector of Customs for the port of Norfolk from 1907 to 
1914, and a leading admiralty lawyer here for many years, died at a local 
hospital yesterday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock after a long illness.
A member of a distinguished Virginia family, Mr. Hughes was the son of the late 
Judge Robert W. and Mrs. Eliza M. Hughes. He was a native of Abingdon, and had 
lived here practically all his adult life.
His academic education was obtained at the College of William and Mary and at 
the University of Virginia, where he obtained his degree in law. He practiced 
law in Norfolk from 1883 until his retirement from the bar in 1925 and 
specialized in admiralty cases.
                     Active in Politics
Mr. Hughes took an active part in politics and was active in club and social 
life of the city. He took a leading part in such organizations as the old 
Virginia Club, the Pewter Platter Club and the Norfolk German Club, and was 
chief national official of the Pi Kappa Alpha college fraternity for a number of 
years. When he established his residence here, he became a member of Christ 
Church and later continued his affiliation with Christ and St. Luke's.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Madeleine P. Hughes, two daughters, Miss 
Patricia Hughes and Mrs. Saunders Wright, the latter being by a former marriage, 
and one brother, Robert M. Hughes, Sr.
Private funeral services and burial will be conducted here tomorrow.
