Hughes, and daughter of Joseph E. and Mrs. Elizabeth Brickhouse Swain, a native of Columbia, N.C., and a resident of Norfolk for 45 years, died yesterday at 3:20 p.m. at a Norfolk hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and resided at 322 West 17th Street. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hughes Lasater, and Mrs. Vivien Hughes Groves, both of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. D. T. Gornto, of Hopewell, Mrs. W. M. Marshall, of Richmond, and Mrs. H. D. Haycock, of Norfolk; three brothers, the Rev. H. Lewis Swain, of Norfolk, A. C. Swain, of Libertyville, Ill., and W. S. Swain, of Orlando, Fla., and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Ewell and Williamson Funeral Home Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thad Groves, 1319 North Brandon Avenue.
