Mrs. Hughes was born in Norfolk and was the widow of Louis L. Hughes Sr. She was the retired co-owner of L.L. Hughes Plumbing and Heating and had also been a health educator with the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Tuberculosis Association. She was a member and deaconess of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church and member of the Gleaners and Golden Aires. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Links Inc., Colonial Maids, the Women's Club, Zites Bugs, Melders, YWCA Board and United Way Board. She was a volunteer for 17 years with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Gwendolyn Victoria Baety of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Louis L. Hughes Jr. of Baltimore; and a grandchild, Walter George Baety of Tucson. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Cederick Kirkland-Harris. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . A wake will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the church. E.A. Hughes Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
